AMD teasing us over 939 pin Athlon FX
While AMD has not announced the existence of the 939 pin Athlon FX, it sure talks about it a lot in an unofficial manner. There are a lot of rumours floating about this beast, and the official silence doesn't help to quash them. Things we know are that the new socket will allow the use of non-registered memory and make four layer motherboards possible.
The first one is a no-brainer. The FX line was a stopgap pushed out in a hurry, and it needed to use the same expensive memory as the Opteron, which it is. The main point behind the new socket is to allow for the use of cheaper components that would not cut it in the server world, but work just fine for gamers. The exact mechanism of this change is a constant flow of contradictions from the moles at AMD central. The most promising mechanism is to split the current 1x128 memory configuration into a 2x64 configuration. The capabilities are there, but will they actually do it? |
