Intel's 157-nm litho decision prompts angry reactions
Intel Corp.'s decision to bypass 157-nm lithography, announced Friday (May 23), prompted others to voice their own, sometimes angry, views on the future of lithography. Some are claiming that Intel pushed the industry to invest heavily in 157-nm tools, only to pull the rug out from the 157-nm development effort, partly in order to swing support toward EUV lithography.
"A lot of CEOs at equipment and materials companies are scratching their heads right now, trying to figure out if Intel's decision spells the end of the 157-nm generation," said one source, asking not to be identified. |

Butterflies Guided By Body Clocks, Sun
Scientists have figured out for the first time how the monarch butterfly uses an intricate interplay of its internal body clock and the sun to guide its extraordinary annual pilgrimage from eastern and midwestern North America to its tiny winter home in the pine woods of central Mexico.
Researchers said yesterday that the monarchs -- the orange-colored denizens of summer gardens all over the United States -- use their body clocks to orient themselves in a southwesterly direction as they fly toward Mexico, guided by the position of the sun as it moves across the autumn sky. |

802.11g transfer rate controversy meaningless, says Apple
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. (IEEE), the group responsible for setting standards in the networking industry, approved a new and final draft standard for 802.11g wireless LANs. The standard was approved by the IEEE on May 15, but will not be made publicly available until members of the IEEE 802.11 working group ratify it next month.
Recent published reports that the final standard for 802.11g will be throttled down to 20Mbit/sec aren't an indication of any actual change to the spec, according to Apple's Vice President of Software, Mike Bell.
Bell said the spec has not been throttled back at all, and explains using the familiar 802.11b specification. |
