Microsoft makes gains in database arena
Microsoft gained ground on its database rivals in 2002, despite a decline in sales for the market as a whole, according to research published Wednesday by Gartner Dataquest.
Corporate belt-tightening of information technology dollars took its toll on the $6.6 billion relational database market last year, which saw revenue from new licenses decline $495 million, or nearly 7 percent, according to the study.
Microsoft took third place in 2002 for databases that run on Windows and Unix, having almost 23 percent of that category. The software giant boosted its position to 18 percent of the overall database market, a dramatic 17 percent rise from 2001.

Intel Chipset Added To New PCs
Chipmaker Intel is expected to announce a new chipset today that will go into high-end PCs for corporate buyers.
A chipset is a collection of chips that connects the main processor in a computer to the main memory chips and other parts of the computer. The new chipset had been codenamed Springdale, but will officially be called the 865G. It's the second Intel-made chipset to support an 800-megahertz Front Side Bus and Double Data-Rate DRAM memory.
With the new chipset, data flow faster between the processor and other parts of the system, which should improve performance of things like graphics for games and video editing.
The chipset also supports a technology called hyperthreading, which lets a chip do two things at once--thereby speeding up overall performance.
